The tartans on the binding were both created in 1871 to commemorate the marriage between John Douglas Sutherland Campbell (1845-1914) Marquess of Lorne (later 9th Duke of Argyll and Governor General of Canada) to Princess Louise (1848-1939) daughter of Queen Victoria. They incorporate the same colours as the tartan of Clan Campbell. They are formally known as the “Louise Commemorative” tartan (designed by Mr. M'Kissock of Girvan) and the “Lorne District” tartan (designed by Mr. Ross of Glasgow). |
